Tone on Texture

10.31.2026 - Of late, I’ve been prattling on about the chaos of using multiple glazes en tandem.

I have a very hard time working with more than two colors, three definitely makes my brain hurt… then toss in the unknown variables that come with which clay body is used, and - ironically - the placement of said item in the kiln!

I have been told this in reference to the art of creating pottery:

“Because it’s a lengthy & many stage process, you will have so many opportunities to fail”.

…sigh… often times you’re simply at the mercy of the unforeseen… Will it warp during the drying process? Will the glaze run too much? Was the glaze mixed sufficiently to suspend all particles? Was enough applied so as to get sufficient coverage? …and so on…

Sometimes the simplicity of one quiet glaze and a stunning texture is the balm that soothes… This then becomes the accompaniment to what it holds, and doesn’t fight for presence.

Personally - I love this!
